Building a Skills-Driven XR Ecosystem in Europe

Extended Reality, or XR, is creating new opportunities for how people learn, work, train and innovate. Bringing together Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and other immersive technologies, XR is already relevant to sectors such as education, healthcare, manufacturing, architecture, design, cultural heritage and professional training.

However, Europe’s XR ecosystem is not built around technology alone. Its success depends on people with the right skills and on cooperation between education, industry, research, public institutions, startups and innovation organisations.

XR requires a wide range of professionals. Developers create immersive applications, designers shape accessible user experiences, educators integrate XR into learning, trainers use simulations to build practical competences, and entrepreneurs transform ideas into new products and services.

No single organisation can build Europe’s XR ecosystem independently. Education providers need to understand industry needs, while businesses need access to skilled professionals and relevant training. Startups need networks and testing environments, and public bodies need evidence to support responsible adoption.
